Grave of the Fireflies

The moment every things gone a-hoo and the shit literally starts to hit the fan there’s no one else you can really rely on except family. If you are up for another tear jerking story, especially one that concentrates on the bond between siblings, then Hotaru no Haka aka Grave of the Fireflies is another movie you should write down on your watch list.

Type: Movie
Genre: Drama, Historical
Duration: 1 hr. 28 min.
Aired: Apr 15, 1988
Rating: PG-13 – Teens 13 or older

Set in old Japan around the end of World War II, a young boy Seita and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko struggle to survive in the crumbling society with no one to depend on than one another.

If you haven’t noticed yet it was animated by Studio Ghibli. The animation is alright, it’s pretty old but it was released in Japan on 1988, comparing it to other works that were released around that period, I’d say it’s pretty damn good.

The introduction starts off with Seita in a train station, looking ragged and is at the verge of dying from starvation. This is a little bit depressing, but it sends the message that this will be kind of a depressing story. The rest of the story is told in flashback.

NOTE: The story is based on the 1967 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka, it’s been said that the novel was written as an apology to his younger sister, who died during World War II.
The movie had 2 live-action remakes one released on 2005, the other on 2008.

Like I said before at the start of this review, if you are up for another sentimental and heart touching story then I recommend you watch this. The story really is beautiful. It will make you cry, heck it made me cry. The fact that it portrays a really true yet sad side of reality that is brought to us by the chaos and war of mankind makes it even more heart touching. And one more thing that’s great about it is that it doesn’t portray any bad guys or heroes, it’s all just about the suffering brought by war, and the heart warming story of siblings looking out for each other.
