Honey and Clover

Probably one of  few anime series that could inject you with mixed feelings every now and then. I consider Honey and Clover as one of few beautiful Anime series that my eyes had laid upon, maybe the best. It slipped its way through my top 10 as my 5th favorite anime of all time. Honey and Clover is the type of Anime that will reel you in with its top notch sequencing and its- I should probably save this for the review section

Follow through the lives of Takemoto Yuuta, Mayama Takumi, and Morita Shinobu as they make their way through graduating, working and finding love, being inspired at Hanamoto Hagumi, who is a small 18 year old girl but a very talented artist.

It started of with the introduction of the characters, but it was presented in a way that the characters are introduced as the story goes along.  The story is made up of two romantic storylines that features two kinds dramatic situations that each person may experience in his/her lifetime. The group was considered to be the main character on the first few episodes but in the latter it all came down to Takemoto Yuuta, who the story is mainly focused on specially on the last few episodes.

Plots in the story include two love triangle relationships, each with a different set of characters from the group. One of which is having to love a person that loves another person that hasn’t gotten over the death of her husband and the both of them reaches out to the person they love but neither got their love back from the person they like. Second of which is having to resolve expressing their feelings to the same person they like.

Despite these love problems they manage to find themselves with everyone’s company at the end of the day, as friends and that is something truly beautiful about this series.

vlcsnap-2013-06-22-21h06m40s162A well written story indeed, Honey and Clover seizes to impress with each episode having some sort of life-lesson from the characters that the viewers tends to reflect upon. Honey and Clover knows how to end each episode with realization of the characters regarding the events of each episode then summing up to a wonderful soundtrack used for the ending theme.

Insert songs are often used in some episodes for emotional effects that greatly transfer the feel of the story onto the viewer. They mostly contain speechless shots of events that happened shortly after or events that happened to the character in the past. It is to keep the flow of emotions constant at the same time the viewer gets to understand a bit more on the character that was given an Insert song section.

Meaningful quotes does feel the minds of the viewers as the characters narrate their point of view of their situation. It makes the story seems long having many different events on one episode. At some point I thought one episode lasted for 45 minutes but it was only 25 minutes, having presented an event as each character spoke his/her thoughts in her mind about the person he/she is with during that event creates the illusion of watching a long scene and when it is over you will feel that you have just watched a movie.

The overall character design didn’t attract me much from the start but it tends to grow on you as you watch each episode. The Japan Landscape and Cityscape looks amazing and looks spot on. Hagu-chan’s facial expressions that looks chibi is cute and adorable. Over all i have no complaints about the art.

Morita Shinobu, is probably my favorite character of the series. Though I have similar experiences as Takemoto Yuuta, i was quite fond of Morita Shinobu and how he can do anything he wishes. Basically I felt the want of being similar to everyone of them. Honey and Clover is quite the emotional ride. I’ve felt connected to the story from the first time i watched the first episode down to when i’ve finished the series. The series left me clamoring for more, I teared up a little not from the romantic-emotional events but from Takemoto’s experiences, i can somewhat relate to him in terms of everything except his family.

Honey and Clover is definitely a must watch, I’ve been wanting to make review about it in the past but I’ve only managed to grasp its context after re-watching the episodes. I’ll be watching the final season soon after. Its the type of Anime that will reel you in with its top notch sequencing and its utterly beautiful soundtrack, there are comedic reliefs every now and then.
