Death Billiards

People say that everyone is equal and that no one is above another person. It’s a pleasant thing to hear…………but, don’t they also judge one another, saying that ‘these’ people are good, they will go to heaven while on the other hand ‘these’ people, they’ve done some bad things, they should go to hell. So which is it really?

Death Pool

SYNOPSIS

Death Billiards is one of the four anime works that each received 38 million yen (about US$480,000) from the “2012 Young Animator Training Project.” Just like in 2010 and 2011, the animation labor group received 214.5 million yen (US$2.65 million) from the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, and it distributed most of those funds to studios who train young animators on-the-job.

An old and a young man find themselves in a mysterious bar where they have to play a game of billiard. The bet: their lives.

STORY

Death Billiards, also known as Death Pool, introduces an original concept on how life works after death. It opens us to an interesting idea, whether the life of two people can be compared and measured.

The anime starts off introducing two strangers, an elderly man and a young man well there’s really not much introduction considering their names were never mentioned. They are in bar and appears to be the only customers, along with them is the bartender and a female assistant. After a few questions from the bartender, they realize they have no memory of how they got to the place. The bartender then explains that they’ve been chosen to play a game. The game obviously enough was billiards/pool but it isn’t just any ordinary pool game. In addition, in this game they will have to risk their lives but interestingly enough it’s not their lives that they should be worried about.

ART

The animation and art is quite appealing, if not gorgeous. They’ve done well on presenting visuals,  having detailed backgrounds and appealing characters as well as pretty amazing perspectives here and there.

REMARKS

All in all, it was a nice watch. Considering it was only a one-episode-animation/movie, they’ve done a good job on the story telling and making the anime interesting to watch until the end. I’d say give it a try.

I still liked Little Witch Academia more of the 3 indie pictures but this one was good too.
