Sword of the Stranger (2007)

After watching Anime such as Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai, Rurouni kenshin and Saraiya Goyou I decided to check out Sword of the Stranger. Why not make a review about the previously mentioned anime? Well for one half of the samples I’ve stated is already reviewed by one of my authors, Peterpolevector (links are on the words). Also Sword of the Stranger is a Movie, I haven’t done movie reviews often so here we go.

Before we start off, Change is in the air, meaning as you may have already noticed, new design for the featured images, new layouts for my posts with a little help from microsoft word and hopefully better content. This blog’s authors are no longer posting except for me of course but i’ll keep them as authors in case they would like to share whats on their minds.

I’ve mentioned Ming dynasty because that is where most of the characters are from. Its weird for me to be hearing chinese language in a Japanese setting. Anyway,The movie started of with quite the attention-getting fight scene. From then you know that this movie isn’t going to hold back on battle accuracy. At first I thought the protagonists are the group of foreigners in red that spoke chinese. The Japanese then referred to the chinese as Ming/s from Ming Dynasty, its stated somewhere in the beginning but its fun to share. I didn’t get bored, i didn’t drift away my attention was glued to each scene, yes its that good of a movie.

Lets start off with the violence and gore in this movie, although gore is a bit strong, there is a lot of chopped heads, sliced body parts and basically blood. Its not for children with weak personalities! It is better than the usual “slice and the target falls to the ground” that we see in swordfights in any anime.Next up the story which is a very typical type of story where the protagonist needs help, hires a skilled warrior and they develop friendship to the point where payment is no longer whats keeping them together. Now that i think about it the movie isn’t really focused on the story, its much more scattered, meaning uhm. OKay lets say its a checklist. Find out about the boy (check), find out the sellsword’s background (check), why people are chasing the boy (check) then Fight scenes. Once you checked of each of those, thats it. You don’t get to look back on why, when, where or how. Since all of the questions are cleared up you just want to see the bad guys die.
vlcsnap-2014-04-22-14h25m18s1I enjoyed the movie and the development of the characters, the bond of the boy and his dog and the sellsword which became the fatherly figure for the boy, teaching him stuff like how to ride a horse and to use a sword, treat injuries, asses the situation you know normal Ming Dynasty time stuff.

RATING: 3.9 / 5
