No, she isn’t the protagonist but she plays a crucial role in this series- so does everyone else. Shiki starts off with a couple of dead bodies with uncertain reasons and a few sickly residents stricken with an unknown sickness. The whole thing gets you asking questions, from plot to characters. You pretty much have no clue as to what is going on.*Spoilers Ahead

I thought at first that it was some kind of virus that’s spreading throughout the village since everybody has the same symptoms and would die shortly. I never would have guessed things would turn occult.

REVIEW

I know who the characters are and what their possible roles would be in the near future, or so I thought. Shiki kept me pointing at the wrong direction ever since the beginning. Either that or I just suck at predictions. All sorts of feelings came over me while watching. I experienced fear; in a sense that I feared for this one character to be killed off. I experienced sorrow; for those helpless moments where friendship lends aid and leads to death and a whole lot more. The characters are unique and not at all dull. I wasn’t sure how to go about with the art style but I guess it’s part of the anime’s charm. The characters’ hairstyles seem to determine the degree of each role. The more a hairstyle stands out the more they are likely to contribute to an important point in the story. The thing is, you’re about to see the most innocent of characters turn crazy in this anime, all for survival.

*Spoilers Ahead

At the very beginning I tried to look for a reason to side with the killers. They kill because they have to; if they don’t kill they die. It’s a simple straightforward reason that deals a massive consequence to everything and everyone in the area. I thought for sure that this anime would make it rain some fight scenes, but it did not. It’s because of the way it’s set up. A weird family moves in (pretty sure at this point that they aren’t human) and they don’t show up for the first half of the anime but their subordinates are shown killing locals. Usually one would think the good guys would have to battle the minions before the boss.
Everything shifts when the Doctor finally has a chance to examine an enemy. It was inhumane, to say the least. He tried medications to see if the “enemy” could be cured. In short, he experimented on her. After that, the anime spiraled deeper into darkness. Tables turned from who you thought was causing danger into the ones in danger.

Do I have to talk about the Opening and Ending themes? Nope, nothing special on that end.

vlcsnap-2014-08-06-16h54m22s92I doubt Shiki is a horror anime. It didn’t scare me one bit. However, the blend of Mystery, Supernatural, and Thriller fit the big picture. I enjoyed every bit of it: how it changes your mindset on the two factions, how you pity one because he has to do what he does because it’s needed then you find out he’s wrong which makes you just as wrong. It’s a whole field of ups and downs and with that I give it:

RATING: 4.5/ 5

IT IS PRETTY HARD TO MAKE A REVIEW WHILE TRYING TO AVOID SPOILERS. I MEAN, IT’S A REVIEW SO IT HAS TO HAVE SPOILERS IN ORDER FOR OTHERS TO UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE THING. I TRIED TO LESSEN THE IMPACT OF THE SPOILERS VIA PARAPHRASING TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA BUT NOT RUIN THE WHOLE THING.
